O Ukraine is inspired by current events in Kyiv, Bucha, and
Mariupol. The acts of resilience and hope of the Ukrainian citizens harkens back to the
ancient trope of phoenix rising from the ashes. For the artist, John
Kovach—with Eastern European roots in his own DNA—the impulse for this piece
was simple, heartfelt, and consistent with a belief that art should evoke
political activist emotions in the viewer.
